When you have created an appearance you find pleasing, be sure to save everything - shape, skin, hair, and HUDs as well as shoes and garments to a folder. The simplest way to do this is to open the Inventory window and type "worn" in the search box. Everything associated with your avatar will appear. Open another window. Create a folder and name it something you want to associate with a back-up of the present avatar. Copy all of the items listed as "worn" to the new folder.
Later, to restore your avatar to that appearance, you simply drag the folder onto your avatar. Voila!
